Lately I’ve had a lot of requests for personal branding, lifestyle and headshot photography, and I couldn’t be more pleased.
I truly enjoy the process of brainstorming with my clients and collaborating on set ideas to help them visually communicate their unique vision. For this particular shoot, I was approached by a local actor who needed some images that would represent the range of characters he could play, from friendly neighbor, to sexy boyfriend, to earthy woodsman.
Once we decided on the “characters” we would capture, we had a series of back and forth emails where we discussed wardrobe, props and location. I think you’ll agree that we captured some really great shots, but the success of this shoot was due entirely to the fact that we had a wonderful collaboration.
My client could not have been more professional and he and his agent were so happy with the results. I’m about to share with you how you can ensure your shoot is on target too!
HOW CAN I ENSURE MY HEADSHOT/LIFESTYLE/PERSONAL BRANDING SESSION IS ON POINT?
I thought you’d never ask! :-)
It’s important to keep in mind that a successful headshot, lifestyle or branding session depends not only on finding an experienced photographer with a great portfolio. Yes, making sure your photographer knows what she’s doing is key, but capturing great images also depends on you.
Below is a list of steps you can take to ensure your session is the best it can be:
Have a clear vision of your brand identity and/or the visual message you want to communicate with your photos
Create a Pinterest board or other mood board with images that reflect the types of shots you would like your photographer to capture
Search for a photographer whose style suits your vision and let them know which images in their portfolio best represent your vision for your shoot
Schedule your photographer weeks (if not months) in advance of your session so you both have time to plan for your shoot
Have a shots list ready and plan to collaborate and brainstorm with your photographer - your shoot should be a team effort
Gather the props that you will be providing and be sure all items are clean and photo-ready
Prepare your wardrobe and make sure ALL ITEMS ARE CLEAN AND WRINKLE FREE. I really can’t emphasize this enough. Wrinkles are really difficult to re-touch. Some good effort on your part will help you avoid retouching fees.
Schedule appointments for hair, make-up, and nails in advance. Your photographer may have suggestions for local hair and make-up stylists, but if you have someone you trust, this is always the best choice
Arrive at your session on time (or better yet, early) and have all of your items ready to begin shooting as soon as possible
Be clear and consistent in your communications with your photographer before, during and after your shoot
Last, but not least, relax and have fun!
I hope this list helps you be well prepared for your headshot, lifestyle, or branding shoot. If I can help you capture some perfect images, please feel free to reach out at jackelin@jackelinslack.com or 801-742-1220.
